John Nugent Awarded the Freedom of the City of London
We’re incredibly proud to share that John Nugent, Founder and Chief Executive of Green & Fortune, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London — one of the capital’s oldest and most prestigious honours.
The ceremony recognised John’s contribution to London’s hospitality and events industry and the role Green & Fortune has played in shaping a modern, independent events business rooted in people, quality and creativity.
Reflecting on the occasion, John said:
“It was a wonderful celebration amongst family and friends — a ceremony steeped in history, yet full of modernity. Like many things in life, an award like this is the result of many hands and I’m grateful for the support and friendships I have around me. It was so good to have a celebratory day.”
A Positive Moment for London’s Events Industry
The award comes at a time of renewed confidence across London’s events and hospitality sector. Corporate demand is strong, international business is returning and the appetite for bringing people together — through conferences, dinners and celebrations — has never been greater.
As John notes: “The desire to meet face-to-face has never been stronger. Whether it’s conferences, dinners or celebrations, people are seeking meaningful connections — and hospitality is the stage where that happens.”
This positive momentum is reflected across Green & Fortune’s portfolio. Kings Place Events and Sea Containers Events are both reporting record performance, with sales currently 28% and 33% ahead of last year, respectively. Collectively, event sales are 117% ahead for the next financial year, while Kings Place Events achieved its highest revenue year on record in 2024/25, exceeding its annual budget months ahead of year-end.
John added: “Our industry has faced pressures around costs, recruitment and consumer confidence — but we’ve shown extraordinary resilience. The businesses that put people, quality and innovation first are the ones that will thrive. I believe hospitality in London is entering one of its most dynamic periods.”
A Proud Moment — and Looking Ahead
The Freedom of the City is the latest recognition for John, who was also named UK Philanthropist of the Year at the Vision Ireland Awards in 2024 for his charitable fundraising and community work and presented the Outstanding Contribution award at the 2024 Foodservice Cateys.
This honour is both a proud milestone and a moment to reflect on the collective effort of the teams, partners and clients who continue to shape Green & Fortune’s journey. As the business looks ahead, the focus remains firmly on talent, sustainability and creating experiences that reflect the diversity, energy and ambition of London.
